1950s-1960s
At the end of the 1940s, the school recruited promising young professors known as the '49ers. These minds helped to establish Florida State University as a premier institution of higher learning in the sciences. Over the next two decades the school introduced doctoral programs for existing departments, beginning with Chemistry in 1952, while also creating new courses in meteorology, oceanography, nuclear science, and radiation chemistry. By expanding its offerings, FSU embraced the opportunity to promote academic discovery in a rapidly advancing scientific world.
