1990s-present
The Oceanographic Institute of the 1960s laid the groundwork for the current FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory. FSUCML emphasizes research, education, and outreach through its study of ecosystems in and around the Gulf of Mexico. The school's study of the Gulf continued in 2011 with its involvement in the Deep-C Consortium, a four year project that examined the effects of oil on the health and environment of marine ecosystems. The Flying Circus of Physics -- an open house for the Department of Physics to entertain, educate, and experiment with the community -- was created as a biennial event in 1991. This served as the inspiration for the annual Mag Lab open house which continues to this day. By engaging the community and addressing current issues with its research facilities, FSU has the opportunity to significantly impact the scientific world with its discoveries.
